Lollibop - The Big Bash for Little People (and the bigger ones)

If you’ve got kids aged 10 and under, get yourself to Lollibop this August. Forget Glastonbury, forget family-friendly Camp Bestival even – this is an amazing event for children, featuring everything from Thomas & Friends to CBBC presenter Andy Day (a favourite of the mums) and all sorts inbetween.

We’ve been to the last couple of Lollbop festivals in London and we’re delighted that the event is coming to Hertfordshire. It’s taking place at the beautiful Hatfield House grounds on August 15th, 16th and 17th).

Ticket prices start from £20 (with children under 12 months free) for each day and it’s well worth the money. Once you’re inside, all entertainment and activities are free – even the face painting – and the event is open from 10am till 6pm.

From experience, your kids will LOVE it. You will too, if you enjoy joining in, having fun and (in my case) meeting the semi-frightening Titan the Robot. If you start to flag, there’s even the Adult Creche, where you can grab a swift beer or wine (we may or may not have done this...).

The programme this year is awesome. Highlights include Justin Fletcher (God bless him), Andy Day’s Live Show (I’ll be heading over for that one…), Lazy Town Live, Michaela Strachan’s Really Wild Adventure Shows (one for the dads), Horrible Histories: Ruthless Romans, Skylanders Trap Team and Thomas & Friends. Add to that Chris & Pui (Show Me, Show Me) and two Misters (Bloom and Maker), plus much, much more.

You can find out more and book tickets here.

But we have got a family pass for four to give away. You simply need to email us at editorial@parentingdaily.co.uk or visit us at the Teddy Bears Picnic, Hertford Castle this Sunday (June 29th).

You're guaranteed a great day. Just watch out for this happening when it's time to take the kids home...

Terms & Conditions ·      The competition closes Sunday July 6th  ·      We have one family pass to giveaway. Each pass admits 4 people, one person in the group must be aged over 18 (NB children under the age of 12 months do not require a ticket)  ·      The winning family can attend on the day of their choice, either August 15, or August 16 or August 17. Could you do Glastonbury with kids...?

As the summer finally kicks into action, so too does the busy music festival season, with an array of well-established events occupying fields and spaces next to an ever-expanding selection of lesser known boutique music festivals across the UK.

As an experienced gig goer of many years, I was always (naively) very vocal in my youth about attending such events as an adult with children - why would you not take your little ones to festivals to check out bands?

Most children love music, and live music especially. There seems to be an almost tribal instinct inherited by them to sway about madly to music or (in the case of my little boy) 'air guitar' wildly while hopping up and down on one leg.

As a teen, I would often watch parents attending Glastonbury with their kids in tow, their children running care-free through the muddy walkways, resembling street urchins of the late 18th century. I'd comfort myself that just because I would eventually grow up and become an adult, it wouldn't stop me from enjoying the festival experience with my wife and kids.

Fast forward a fair number of years and reality hits home - an overnight trip to the grandparents and you're packing more wipes/toys/clothes/snacks than you would ever take for a full-on weekend of madness at Glastonbury (bag full of alcohol, secondly wells).

On top of this, there's the constant worry for us parents while taking kids out in a normal 'controlled' environment like the weekend supermarket shop, as we attempt to stop the youngsters from causing unnecessary harm to him/herself or any unsuspecting civilians. Lord, how could anyone cope with this amount of pressure in a muddy field of 50,000 music fans?

Thankfully, festivals have come a long way over the decades and now cater for families and fans alike, with a recent boom in the last five years of kid-specific festivals - offering them a taste of things to come and a stepping stone to their first real music festival experience.

Lollibop (August 15th - 17th, Hatfield House, Herts) is now in its fifth year and caters specifically for children. We've taken our son for the last couple of years and, if past appearances from Dick and Dom, Mr Bloom, live sets from the incredible Zingzillas and the legendary Mr Tumble are anything to go by, this year will be another huge success. More on this - plus the chance to win tickets to the event- to follow!

Further afield, Bestival (September 4th - 7th, Isle Of Wight) continues to go from strength to strength. Now in its tenth year, it caters for true music lovers and families alike, offering something for everyone in a chilled, relaxed environment.

And for the adventurous? Glastonbury starts this week (June 25th - 29th, Pilton, Somerset) offering a myriad of performances across the site, from circus to mime, comedy and puppetry, theatre, music and magic. And this year, dads get a special performance from Dolly Parton, too.

Just don't forget your wellies...

Parenting Daily World Cup Diary - Day Three: Luis Suarez bites again, won't somebody think of the children?!

So he's been at it again - Luis Suarez, that most despicable of footballers, last night 'bit' another player on the pitch for the third time in his career.

I'm not sure why I bothered to put the word bit in inverted commas - sure, it's been trial by TV replay from a bad camera angle, but repeated viewings leave little doubt that he did it.

The suits at FIFA are at time of writing deliberating over his punishment, which will surely see him expelled from the World Cup and given a lengthy ban from international football. And of course there's will be implications for his current club side and whoever he was going to join this summer (he's been agitating for a move - classy).

But what about his image and the impact such bitey madness has on impressionable youth?

Well, his image was already in the toilet - two counts of on-field biting and one of racism takes care of that. What's telling though is that the first biting offence didn't stop Liverpool signing him, the second biting/racism offence didn't stop Liverpool playing him, and the latest incident probably won't stop another big club buying him.

Clearly, football operates by a different moral code to the rest of us - if you're good enough at your job, that trumps any other considerations when it comes to your character/previous.

Then in the immediate aftermath of the incident we had the inevitable 'won't somebody thing of the children?!' commentary. Now, as I've mentioned in previous blogs, this might be my son's first World Cup, but he's only seven months old, so he's spared the pain of watching his team get beaten, or witnessing toothy on-field assaults.

But as I sat there watching Glenn Hoddle talk nonsense on the telly box, I tried putting my 'concerned parent' hat on and pondered whether, if The Boy was at a more impressionable age, would I be worried that he would go into school one day and 'do a Suarez' having seen the offence in full widescreen HD glory?

And my conclusion was that no, I wouldn't be worried. Why? Because Luis Suarez clearly has issues. Normal people just don't go out and about biting people, either on the football field or in the street (market town centres after 10 pints on a Friday night notwithstanding).

If there was a child at school that did carry out such repetitively bad biting behaviour, chances are he or she would require professional help in the same way Suarez does. Such behaviour is just not normal.

So nope, from a parenting standpoint it's not the biting in football that worries me - I'd actually be more concerned about on-field cheating - diving, fake injuries, bad tackles and the like. That's the stuff that school kids might copy as it comes under 'gamesmanship', not ultra violent physical assault.

And let's be clear - there's a big difference between what you'd call a 'nasty' challenge and making a conscious decision to bite an opponent.

So for all the handwringing at one individual's extreme - and extremely rare - behaviour, what we really should be doing is asking why nothing ever seems to be done about the kinds of on-field bad behaviour that ARE copied by - and even taught to - kids.

Over to you, FIFA and the The FA, but I'm not holding my breath.

Fishing for Tiddlers - A beginner's guide to angling in East Herts (and beyond!)

The famous English writer Izzak Walton once said: "No life is so happy and so pleasant as the life of the well-govern'd angler".

While I'd agree with this quote (in principle, mainly when I'm catching fish!) it can prove to be a tricky task passing on the delicate art of fishing to youngsters; their inquisitive minds wander relentlessly and patience is an unknown emotion to a pre-schooler or primary school age child.

However, with the right knowledge and know-how, fishing trips with children can become great bonding experiences, offering more than just fishing itself; instead enjoying the peace and tranquility of nature as a whole.

Stories of monster fish lurking in the depths of the rivers and lakes have been told to children for centuries, but they take on a whole new dynamic when re-told on a river bank. Keeping a child entertained and interested in this way is key to maintaining attention, fishing can be a slow process, and while many adults enjoy losing themselves in such a manner youngsters can become bored and lose interest very quickly.

As long as hooks and weights are kept out of harm's way, a child can be involved with most fishing tasks, especially when it comes to positioning floats or reeling in lines. It's also a good skill-set for them to learn, helping with hand and eye coordination.

Most local fishing clubs have a 'tiddler' lake, where adults can take kids and the fishing is relatively easy. Hertford and Ware both have excellent fishing clubs with lots of rivers and lakes to choose from, with the latter benefiting from a learner lake.

Above all else, enjoy the teaching experience, make sure the child is safe from the water's edge and try and ignite the passion of the dedicated angler within them. Who knows, maybe one day they'll end up catching monsters of their own...
